Pedigree Charts!

Pedigree Charts!

Let's learn about how to trace a trait or a genetic disorder through a Pedigree!  A Pedigree is similar to a family tree. Circles represent females, and squares represent males. Lines between a male and a female symbolize the are "married" or have "mated."  Their offspring will then be on the layer below them.  If either the circle or square are shaded, the trait is present in that person.  If the square or circle is only half shaded, that person is considered a "carrier."  You will need to read any back ground information given to determine if the particular trait being studied is dominant or recessive.  Pedigree charts can look at both the inheritance of a dominant and a recessive trait - be sure to READ!
