Tactile Group Directions

Hi Kinesthetic Group!

Since you learn best by doing, you will be doing a couple activities! Follow the directions below:

Materials: Each student will need 2 large rectangular graham crackers, a paper plate, and a scoop of  frosting! You will also need a cup of water to share.

Part 1: Convergent
  • Break 1 large graham cracker into 4 rectangles.
  • Using a plastic knife, spread a think layer of frosting on the center of the paper plate.
  • Using 2 graham cracker rectangles (save the other 2 for part three), dip one end of both graham crackers into a cup of water.
  • Quickly remove crackers and lay them end to end on your plate with the wet edges almost touching.
  • Slowly push the 2 graham crackers together.  The wet end of the graham crackers will curl and fold upwards as the graham crackers are pushed together.
  • Discard or eat the crackers.
Part 2: Divergent
  • Break 1 graham cracker in half (2 pieces)
  • Using a plastic knife, spread a thin layer of frosting on the center of a paper plate.
  • Lay the two pieces of graham cracker on the frosting and while gently pressing down, pull the two crackers away from each other.
  • Discard or eat the crackers.
Part 3: Transform

  • Use the last 2 graham cracker pieces for this part of the lab that you saved from part one.
  • Fit the two pieces together end to end on top of the frosting on the paper plate.  Now you are ready to model a transform plate boundary
  • Place one hand on each of the graham crackers and push one of the pieces away from you while pulling the other toward you.
  • Discard or eat the crackers.

Next, discuss and answer the following questions with your group.  Write all answers on the worksheet provided.  (Be sure to include all members names.)

  1. What creates a Convergent boundary?  What kinds of land features can Convergent boundaries create?
  2. What creates a Divergent boundary?  What kinds of land features can Divergent boundaries create?
  3. What creates a Transform boundary?  What kinds of land features can Transform boundaries create?
  4. Name something interesting you learned while doing the activity.

Now that you have completed your activity, here are some real images of some of the places you will be researching and finding on the Earth's surface!  Isn't Earth an amazing and beautiful place?  You many now grab an iPad and an independent worksheet to complete your task for the lesson.

The San Andreas Fault
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge in Iceland

The Himalayan Mountains
